Maine Points: Children’s Dyslexia Center

Danny speaks with Thomas E. Pulkkinen, Chairman of the Board of Governors and Barbara Labrecque, Director with The Portland Children’s Dyslexia Center.

In operation for over 20 years, is one of two affiliated centers in Maine and 45 in the northeastern United States dedicated to teaching children with dyslexia how to read. The two centers in Maine are the only two programs dedicated to serving Maine Children with dyslexia. The 45 centers are presently serving over 1,300 children including 24 at the Portland Center that has a waitlist of over 50 children. In addition to training people to become tutors, the Portland Center also works with school districts to train teachers in their schools so they can become professionally certified and tutor children in their own schools rather than traveling to the Center located at 1897 Congress St. in Portland. This greatly expands the number of children overcoming the constraints caused by dyslexia.
